I grieved and learned to let go of Here Lies Love twice in my career. But even with starting the grieving process months ago, I’m still heartbroken with its recent Broadway closing. I still remember the exact moment I got the email to audition, the week of waiting to hear back - a week that felt like a LIFETIME - while I nannied a spoiled UES kid, and the exact moment I got that call at 99 Favor Taste in Sunset Park the day after Thanksgiving to join the off-Broadway company, and could I come in to start watching the show tonight? It was magic. Wild magic. The show was pure joy. I was young. It was Christmas time. It was my first Filipino character. It was my first big ANYTHING. I was startstruck and in love with every moment. I made lifelong family. We ate. A lot. I dreamed of theater to ALWAYS be like this. I didn’t move on with future iterations of HLL. In addition, I have remained critical about the Broadway production, now having a better understanding of our Philippine history, especially in relation to the U.S. I engaged in conversations about the hurt of its misrepresentation, and yet have cheered on my incredibly talented friends from the sidelines and encouraged folks to go experience this show for themselves. The beauty of Here Lies Love in all its flaws and shortcomings, for me, was always about the joy of being Filipino amongst my fellow Filipinos. Of being seen as our authentic selves. And the novelty of it is a case of scarcity complex. The first Filipino show on Broadway. When will this ever happen again? But my dear friends, I hope that when we have aptly mourned the closing of HLL, we can begin to imagine what is NEXT. I’ve had a few months of this process of letting go to know that we must celebrate HLL for the milestone it is AND how it will serve as a stepping stone and lesson for our Filipinx-American future. We must believe that this won’t be the last, the only, and that in fact, Filipino artists are creating incredible stories all over the world RIGHT NOW, if only we invest in them. If only we invest in ourselves. And so, thank you Here Lies Love for showing me what is possible.

Play Like A Winner at NYMF

It's going to be another fun summer of creating some new work at the New York Musical Festival! This July I'll be appearing as ALLISON in PLAY LIKE A WINNER, with book/lyrics by Erik Johnke, music by David Wolfson, and directed by Kevin Connors.
